When I was dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur, I often read business books, mainly written by experts out there. One quote I still remember to these days
"Don't sell anything you wouldn't buy yourself."
The sentence above came from the mouth of Charlie Munger, 93, an investor and a dear friend of Warren Buffet.
For people who turn to entrepreneurship because of economic forces and employment limitations, the sentence above sounds very privileged. I too once wondered what if I didn't ̶w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶ spend a lot of time on my research and instead just started selling whatever products were available outside, perhaps the brand and business are bigger than this.
But obviously, the past is the past and I have already spent more than a year learning about various materials, looking for artisans, and inspirations, as well as studying the competition out there.
It has been an interesting journey, not an easy one, though.
Time passed, and now SE.DU.DO is now 2 years old, still very young and early for a business to comprehend everything. However, I am quite thrilled that we have been building quite a few loyal customers, from ladies who love most of our collections, who buy it not only for themselves, but also to share the love with their best friends, mothers, cousins, or even spouses who purchase our products for their significant partners (we just found this one out recently!).
Summer is here in Vienna, and I proudly say that I am (also) a fan of our best-seller Udara bag. When I started designing the bag, I just knew that I needed a straw bag that is cute but roomy enough to fit all my daily necessities inside. Comfortability is a must while not compromising on style.
It took me some time to decide what kind of embroidery to make, mainly because Indonesia has such high levels of biodiversity across its extensive archipelago.
Turns out, choosing to feature two beautiful butterflies, with one of them is Udara placidula was the most significant decision ever.
Found mainly in Borneo island, the white butterfly embroidery is a showstopper, a conversation starter, whilst the bag does its function perfectly for people like me who just tend to carry many things inside.

A few weeks after the first batch of bags was produced, it was sold out right away. For a small brand like us, it was an achievement I must say. And as we were producing the next batch, I began to design another size. That time I realised I needed a smaller bag for some occasions that don't require me to bring a lot of stuff (but still not a tiny size either). Hence the (S) size came to market. And it was again sold out.
As I am writing this post, we are producing our 7th upcoming batch. Of course still in a small quantity as we are very mindful of not making a lot of waste.

With 36 cm length x 24 cm height, Udara bag (S) fits perfectly for my mobile phone, small notebook and a pen, keys, a small makeup pouch (of lipstick, eyebrow pencil, and SPF lotion) and of course card holder and a coin purse.
From picking up my daughter in kindergarten, an easy walk in the afternoon, and a casual dinner date with the husband, I love how versatile this bag is.

Now I perfectly understand how to interpret the quote above. Instead of taking it defensively, there are many advantages of being a fan of your products. I love hearing suggestions and feedback, but I also like noting down from my experience, because I am my customer.
There are still indeed some works that need to be done, but at the moment I am enjoying how I believe in my creations.
To look back again the famous Mr. Munger says, I am very proud that I produce and sell products that I gladly use!
With love, Amy.
